Nominations for the 2017 Australia Day Awards have now closed. The Award winners will be announced and presented at the Australia Day Gala Dinner in Australia House, London on Saturday 21 January 2017. The annual Awards consist of: Perpetual trophies by Wedgwood, engraved with the name of the winner. The recipients receive a personalised engraved solid silver medallion and an awards pin.

Who is eligible?

Nominees must be Australian citizens for the 'Australian of the Year in the UK' Award and 'Young Australian Achiever of the Year in the UK' Award. Nominees must not be Australian citizens for the 'Honorary Australian of the Year in the UK' Award. State and Federal politicians and vice-regal officers are not eligible. Groups of people or couples will not normally be eligible though in exceptional cases the Awards Selection Committee reserves the right to consider such nominations. Unsuccessful nominees may be re-nominated in subsequent years.

Selection criteria

Regard will be given to the nominee's achievements in the year immediately prior to the receipt of the Award, as well as their past achievements and ongoing contribution to the Australian/UK community. Demonstrated excellence in their field. Significant contribution to the Australian/UK community and nation. An inspirational role model for the Australian/ UK community. The Awards Selection Committee will give consideration to the following in assessing and comparing nominations against the above criteria. Personal, academic and/or professional achievements. Contribution in the relevant field (how has the nominee 'put back' into their field to benefit others). Demonstrated leadership, innovation and creativity. Personal interests and community involvement. Degree of difficulty of the achievement and sacrifices made. Previous awards and recognition. Voluntary involvement. Nature and length of involvement. Demonstrated commitment to personal/vocational/ career development. Availability and commitment to promote national pride and active citizenship through the year of the recipient's appointment.
